Biomimicry for Educators: Integrating Biomimicry into the Curriculum

2-day workshop: 25 & 26 August 2018

SACE registration no. PR12985 (5 CPTD points).

Biomimicry is a way of learning FROM nature how to design innovative products, processes & systems that are truly sustainable. Biomimicry goes beyond sustainability, reconnecting us with nature and showing how we can emulate nature’s genius and wisdom in the design of our world. Biomimicry integrates the disciplines of biology, design, architecture, engineering, technology, economics and business. At school level biomimicry offers the opportunity for applied biological research, and abstracting design blueprints or chemical/ physical/mathematical principles to inspire creativity and design thinking for problem solving.

Teachers across different learning areas and at all levels are inspired by biomimicry to bring it into  their lessons, because it gives the learners hope that they can change the world for the better, and the tools and resources to do so. It is being taught in the Natural sciences; Life Sciences; Geography; Physical Sciences; Mathematics; Business Studies; Economics; Engineering, Art, Graphics and Design; Life Orientation; and even languages.

This course covers the theory and practice of biomimicry, includes interactive exercises and outdoor activities and demonstrates biomimicry as a focus for problem-based and inter-disciplinary teaching and learning. The course culminates in participants designing and presenting a biomimicry-based learning event for their context.

Workbook and extensive teaching and learning resources provided.
